Ergonomics is the scientific study of people in their working environment.1 The goal of studying ergonomics is to eliminate discomfort and the risk of injury in the workplace. Specifically, ergonomics aims to avoid soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries that are often caused by sustained exposure to force, repetitive motion, and/or poor posture.
There are 3 types of ergonomics: cognitive, organizational, and physical. Each of these affects how people interact with their work environment. It is important for both employer and employee to design and arrange the workplace in an efficient yet safe manner.
Ergonomic Tips for a Safe and Healthy Workplace:
- Avoid twisting or bending forward by placing frequently used items directly in front of you. Avoid slouching by moving your chair as close to your work as possible. It is also important to make sure that the weight of the arms is supported at all times.
- Know your body's limits on what you can carry and avoid carrying heavier objects with only one hand. Use lifting aids when necessary.
- Keep shoulders relaxed with the elbows close to your sides. Avoid repetitively reaching above shoulder height. It is also important to place the keyboard and mouse close by to prevent excessive reaching or twisting.
- Alternate stationary posture and movement, such as sitting or standing for long periods, can strain muscles. It is also important to not let your feet dangle while sitting. If your feet don’t comfortably reach the floor, use a footrest or lower your chair.
- Take the necessary steps to control the computer's screen glare. It is also important to rest your eyes periodically to avoid eye strain. The computer monitor should be placed directly in front of you at arm's length away, with the top no higher than eye level.
- Avoid sitting or standing in a way that places body weight more on one side than the other. It is important to keep joints in a neutral position, placing less strain on muscles and ligaments.
Implementing and following ergonomic standards in the workplace increases productivity, health, and safety! It is also linked to heightened employer savings and employee morale while lessening employee absenteeism dramatically. Ergonomics is a win-win!
